It’s been an exciting week for UK coin collectors and if you missed the announcements on our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram then not to worry, we’ve got all the information you need to bring you up to speed. As we welcomed in the new year, new coins for 2018 were also announced! In total, five 2018 UK coins have been revealed, so far…
Anniversaries for the Representation of the People Act, the RAF and Frankenstein are all marked on UK coins in 2018, with a £2 coin for Armistice bringing our First World War ‘story through coins’ to a close. We are also celebrating Prince George’s 5th birthday this year, with a fresh interpretation of St George and the Dragon by Jody Clark. So, here’s a closer look at the first reveal of coins for 2018:
200 years since the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
Dr Frankenstein’s legendary creature is to feature on a UK £2 coin, 200 years after the publication of Mary Shelley’s classic science fiction novel. In detailing the birth of the ‘monster’, Shelley anticipated the era of genetic engineering and medical transplant surgery by more than a century.
1918 Representation of the People Act
The novelist will not be the only female at the forefront of Royal Mint coin designs this year. It is a century since the signing of the Representation of the People Act, when women over 30 were first given the right to vote, along with servicemen over 19 and men over 21. The anniversary will be celebrated with a 2018 UK 50p coin. Click here to find out more.
100 years since the First World War Armistice
The release of a £2 coin commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War Armistice marks the moment that will be sure to occupy thoughts across the nation this year, a century after hostilities ceased and a great silence fell over the battlefields of the Western Front.
Royal Air Force centenary
1918 also saw the formation of the Royal Air Force, the organisation that has been defending the skies above Britain ever since. This year we are joining the nation to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force (RAF) to marking 100 years with the 2018 Royal Air Force £2 coin.
HRH Prince George’s fifth birthday
This year, His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge celebrates his fifth birthday. The young prince inspires a new interpretation of his namesake, St George and the dragon on a UK £5 coin. The story has been linked with royal coins for centuries, symbolising courage and the triumph of good over evil.

The 2018 Lunar Year of the Dog
Our Shengxiào Collection celebrates the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac, or Shengxiào, and their distinctive characteristics and qualities. 2018 sees the fifth release in the collection, celebrating the Lunar year of the dog.
The Sovereign 2018
