Piotr is an agronomist who lives in Yorkshire with his wife and two children. In his spare time, he is a keen calligrapher and enjoys creating new letter forms and logos. In his design for Archery, Piotr used his wife to model the action of pulling a bow in order to capture the energy that is generated before the arrow is released.
The Archery 50p coin is no longer available to purchase from The Royal Mint store. The coin remains in circulation to be found and it can be collected in the Sports Edition Coin Hunt Collector Album. In total 3,345,500 Archery 50p coins entered circulation and, although many will now be in collections, we are still seeing people sharing on social media that they have found one recently.
In a quick interview we asked Piotr…
1) Have you seen your coin ‘in the wild’ yet?
Yes, twice, actually very soon after the release, a big surprise as I found it in my change in ordinary grocery shop in Pocklington :-)
It’s hard to believe, my design was the first one I came across.
Later I found a couple of others and I’m still looking for them…especially badminton which is very nicely designed.
I wish everyone to experience the same feeling…very pleasant to see a piece of your own creation on official currency…how many people will see it? How many opinions will it provoke?
2) Have you heard what the British team think about it?
It would be nice to know, however I saw a comment (archery enthusiast) pointing out more than dozen mistakes: from arrow details to lack of safety equipment to protect the hand, etc…I answered: It is not intended to be an archery manual, but the artistic expression of it :-)
3) What are you looking forward to in 2012?
A similar competition open to the public! I enjoyed this one very much and thank you The Royal Mint – great and brave idea!

About Team GB
The Archery events are scheduled to be held over an eight day period from 27 July to 3 August. All events will take place at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
The Paralympic events will be held at The Royal Artillery Barracks from 30 August to 5 September 2012.
Archery is one of the oldest sports still practiced. It first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1900, was contested again in 1904, 1908 and 1920, then again, after an absence of 52 years, from 1972 to the present.
