As the year draws to a close, we looked back at 2018 and the highlights, celebrations and milestones celebrated here at The Royal Mint.
We marked our fiftieth anniversary at our site in Llantrisant, South Wales. As many may recall, when decimalisation was announced The Royal Mint moved from London to Llantrisant to accommodate new coinage and this month we’ve celebrated our anniversary of that official opening. To read more about it, visit our microsite.
We commemorated a Royal Year of Celebration through coins, with the 65th Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen’s Coronation, a Royal Wedding, The Prince of Wales’ 70th birthday to name a few. At The Royal Mint we are always delighted to be marking such happy events with the nation and striking the official United Kingdom coins that will last for generations to come.
We launched our Great British Coin Hunt, and there’s currently 5 million of our A-Z 10p’s in circulation across the UK. From festive robins to full English breakfasts, our range has proved hugely popular with both commemorators and those collecting from change.
There were coins with a lot of ‘character’ as we brought snow to November with our beautiful Snowman coin and enjoyed a very exciting visit from a very special bear; Paddington Bear™ joined us to learn the art of minting and create his very own coin. You can read more about Paddington’s day at the Mint here.
This year we also launched our new Gifting offering, with gifts inspired by precious metals, coin design and over 1,100 years of British craftsmanship and heritage. From stationery and books, to leather goods and silk scarves, the range offers a choice of options for those who love our coins and our brand, and are looking to treat friends, family, or themselves to something a little bit different.
Within our precious metals division, we launched the Britannia Bars – our first ever branded bar. We also introduced Platinum to the Britannia range in January which has been very popular with our customers. Our silver storage service is also now available, offering secure, 24/7 storage for precious coins and bars. With a number of exciting projects on the horizon, precious metals is thriving.
But as always, coins are at our heart, so as a new year approaches, we’re thinking about the opportunities ahead and what people really value from us, and that is our trust, our authenticity, our quality, our beautiful art, and our craftsmanship. We look to continue delighting our customers throughout 2019 with more exciting products and projects.
We’d like to thank you, our loyal customers, for your continued support, feedback and enthusiasm for our ventures throughout another year.
Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a happy, coin-filled New Year, from all at The Royal Mint.
