The Royal Mint’s Chosen Charity

The Royal Mint is well known for striking coins for the United Kingdom and a number of countries across the world but it also dedicates time to raising money for worthy causes.

Our official charity for 2018–19 is 2 Wish Upon A Star, a charity which provides bereavement support for families who have lost a child or young adult. Local to The Royal Mint, the charity is based in Llantrisant but supports families across Wales.

The Royal Mint has had a chosen a charity for several years and the charity is voted for by staff. 2 Wish Upon A Star is a particularly poignant cause as a number of our staff and their families have and still benefit from 2 Wish Upon A Star’s help .

The Royal Mint’s Internal Communications and Engagement Manager Megan Baldwin comments:

“We started nominating a chosen charity several years ago when we felt that if we had one charity to focus our fundraising on for two years, we could potentially raise a very large sum of money if the whole business got behind it. In the past, we’ve raised tens of thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK, Tŷ Hafan and Velindre, and this year’s charity, 2 Wish Upon A Star, has provided a source of comfort to staff members in both the past and present, so it really does have a personal connection for us as a business.

“2 Wish Upon A Star supports families in many ways, from renovating family rooms in many hospitals across Wales for moments of privacy in a less clinical environment, to providing opportunities for play therapy, right through to long-term counselling. We are delighted to be able to support them, and since March 2018, our fundraising activities have included a monthly employee donation scheme, a bike ride from Haverfordwest to Miskin, a skydive, an onsite ‘Walk The Mint’ event and our annual Supplier Awards raffle.

“We’ve raised £25,000 so far, and as 2019 is our 50th year in South Wales, our CEO Anne Jessopp has set an incredible target of raising an additional £50,000!”

CEO Anne Jessopp comments:

“We know that 2 Wish Upon A Star is a relatively small charity but we hope a donation of this size will make a tremendous difference, and benefit people who live right here on our doorstep. Many of our employees want to volunteer or raise money but struggle to find time in their busy lives to do it;  providing opportunities during the working day allows people not only to participate and feel as though they are making a difference, but it also builds camaraderie amongst our employees. We find with our team events that a friendly competitiveness occurs, with people wanting to beat their workmates which in turn, raises more money for charity – win-win!

“It also allows our employees to meet and work closely with staff members outside of their current teams. It’s great to see staff from the Currency division working closely with staff from Marketing, our Precious Metals division and Customer Services team. Encouraging a sense of unity amongst employees as they work towards a shared goal also contributes to the ongoing, smooth running of our day-to-day business.”

Sarah Morgan-Davies, Marketing, Communications and Fundraising Manager from 2 Wish Upon A Star, comments:

“We are absolutely thrilled to be chosen as the charity partner for The Royal Mint for 2018–19 and their support so far has been invaluable. We are an all-Wales charity who rely entirely on the generosity of our supporters. We do not receive any government funding, so partnerships like we have with The Royal Mint are fundamental to us continuing our vital work. The fundraising total of £75,000 that The Royal Mint has set is simply incredible, and this will enable us to be there and offer crucial support for even more suddenly bereaved families in Wales during their darkest hours.

“Everyone at The Royal Mint is so invested in our work and it has been fantastic to meet so many wonderful people who are helping raise not only incredible amounts of money but also awareness of our cause. We cannot thank everyone at The Royal Mint enough for their amazing hard work and we are so excited for what 2019 will bring.”

CEO Anne Jessopp continues:

“The importance of corporate social responsibility is something we take seriously as a business; we want to give back to the local community and we are delighted to be supporting 2 Wish Upon A Star over the next year and raising vital finds for such a worthy cause.”

We will be sharing our fundraising achievements across social media throughout the year but if you’d like to donate to an upcoming fundraising event, please click here.
